What is Market Depth?

Market depth refers to a list of buyers (bids) and sellers (offers) in the market for a particular security. It can be used to learn about the general liquidity of the security. It is classified as a volume indicator which displays the number of standing orders to buy and sell at various price levels.

Market Depth allows you to gain further insight into information such as:

  • To determine if a particular share has more buyers or sellers in the market.
  • View the difference between the best bid and best offer (also known as the ‘spread’).
  • Number of units available to be purchased or sold at specific price points in the market.

How to find the Market Depth for a specific share?

  1. Select Quotes & Research > Get a Quote.
  2. In the search box, type your desired company name/code and click display. Quotes & Depth Tab
  3. Market Depth will be displayed in a table.

Market Depth takes into consideration the no. (number) of orders, the volume (units) for those orders at a particular price point.

Market Depth consists of two tables – Buyers representing the bids and Sellers representing the offers.

Market depth can be viewed by Price Detail or Order Detail.

Orders are listed in descending order. The price range starts at best price (higher for buyers, lower for sellers) to the end of the list (lower for buyers, higher for sellers).

This can be used to track your position relative to other investors in the market for the same security as it provides a list of all lit market bid and offer prices at the current market condition on the ASX TradeMatch (TM) market.

Amendments to any outstanding orders may affect your position in the market.
